to the untrained ear a collaboration between mosaic boss steve o sullivan and minimal house maestro ricardo villalobos may not seem like the most obvious sound clash. however, dig a little deeper and you ll find that both these artists have a long history and shared love of stripped back aesthetics and dubbed out rhythms carving out respective sounds that have never strayed far from their roots. sullric is the result of a daylong session at the end of 2016 where the pair plugged in, switched on and set everything to cycle: recording several hours worth of material to tape with an edit of their favourite passage worked into two versions in post-production.

any disco dj worth their weight in vinyl knows the name donnell pitman, and until now this has been mostly due to his highly sought after work of the late 70s and early 80s. renewed interest in donnell has reached critical peak over the past few years, fueled by red greg’s feature of donnell’s seminal “love explosion” on joey negro’s under the influence vinyl compilation series and chicago’s numero group putting out long forgotten, unreleased boogie bangers “burning up” and “taste of honey” in 2015.
it was this refreshed enthusiasm that caught the attention of producer kumar mcmillian of chicago-based disco ensemble wings of sunshine. kumar’s group was looking for another vocal collaborator following their 7” debut release on star creature records. a casual introduction led to an informal studio session between the two culminating in a modern disco masterpiece.

this half-speed, deluxe edition released for rsd 2017 features unseen photography from the recording session in a 16 page full-size booklet. the audio source is the continental tapes, mastered at half-speed by the legendary miles showell at abbey road in london – the most stunning reproduction ever made, accentuating the details and nuances that appear throughout this masterpiece.
in our opinion this record is a true and complete masterpiece in every sense of the word, considered by many people to be one of the greatest ever made, regardless of genre. the original continental versions of the album now fetch around $2000.

florian meindl surges ahead in 2017 as he returns once more to his home base flash recordings. he has been locked away in his studio and is now ready to unleash his new album ‘time illusion’. with these album sessions florian has created a special collection of analogue focused tracks which will be released on a double vinyl album and digitally in the spring. amalgamating his array of impressive hardware, he has refined his sound and crafted a selection of tracks that demonstrate intricate knowledge and mastery of his analogue equipment. his aim was to find the right balance between musical depth and sound design while interacting with the hardware. in anticipation for the lp release in early april, florian has prepared a unique live set featuring a modular system, the korg minilogue, effect boxes and a 909 drum machine which were used in the creation of the album and which he will be touring throughout 2017. electronic beats visited him in his basement at riverside studios berlin to record an exclusive live session, which you can find on youtube and his facebook page.

moving music records present the previous unreleased soundtrack to the norwegian cult movie, heaven and hell. a soundtrack written and composed by norwegian maestro egil monn-iversen. it features some of the key norwegian jazz musicians, terje rypdal, jan garbarek and the late svein christiansen. jan erik kongshaug mixed the session.
it was originally recorded summer 1969 and planned for a full release, but it never happened, until now! one of the most exciting norwegian releases this year.
egil monn-iversen nearly perfect score borrows elements from john barrry and lalo schifrin soundtrack music, the opening theme song, sung by inger lise rypdal sounds like it could be a norwegian bond movie theme! key players are hired in from the late 60’s norwegian jazz-scene and you can hear early talents like jan garbarek and terje rypdal in full bloom! the result is a vivid soundtrack that could rank up with any good 60s 70s european groovy soundtrack score!

the new york-based (u)nity is made up of michael valeanu, axel tosca laugart, chris smith, max cudworth and amaury acosta. they formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore afro-cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. they say they ve been influenced by everyone from chucho valdes to art blakey to led zeppelin to kendrick lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. guarapachanga is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at the new school. it s derived from the style known as guarapachangeo the most advanced form of cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. on this recording, (u)nity is graced with a guest performance by grammy award winner pedrito martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on cuban music. martinez is also a priest in the yoruba religion and a historian of cuban culture. over its eight and a half minutes, guarapachanga twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. the whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the afro-cuban essence that is the bands lifeblood. the white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous djs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. if you didnt know guarapachanga was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a loft classic, yet it s also as fresh and exciting as anything you ll hear this year.

in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...

produced and recorded in 1965 during a time when chicago soul was one of the most influential sounds in r&b.the dontells entered the studio and cut two tracks that put that sound on full display. the session was led by producer calvin carter, world famous arranger johnny pate-along with the cities top musicians. these tracks were never released and have only been heard by a few people until now. the a side “move on down the line” grabs you from the first second the needle drops. a mid tempo love song with a trademark arrangement from pate and a vocal melody and approach in the style of chicago’s king of soul, curtis mayfield. “there goes a fool” is the b side and is a reminder why the dontells were one of the best groups out of the windy city. another brilliant production with a top notch arrangement. horns, strings, a swinging backbeat and that signature chicago vocal sound lead by the sweet harmonies of nate, leroy, manuel & ralph. this is no doubt a 60’s soul classic in 2017!

late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini’s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem’s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

the young roman artist emiliano morini, hidden in the shadows, reaches his individual project second goal. after debuting with his first ep in the electronic music scene, which also included a collaboration with ed frimann (an already known character of the roman scene) emiliano shows increased maturity through this refined and elegant work. a not necessarily dancefloor oriented straight cash, combined by extremely pleasent sounds, makes his last ep also usable for a home listening session. the ep consists in 4 tracks, each one clearly mirror of a sensitive and deep soul: -deep fusion- is a high tension piece with a submerged but impetuous roaring bassline. -ocean- that could be almost called a jazz track, full of human presence because of a seem live played ride and a lead that sounds like the result of improvisation. on the b side, we find instead a slightly more -club- dimension, without anyhow the loss of musicality. -techno mod- is a tribute to the best acid techno surrounded by an amniotic sea of pads. -vinyl track 2a- portically closes the work with loads of hypnosis and melancholy sounds enclosed in the same box.

talk of japanese soul often refers to enka, the sentimental ballad emanating from downhome bars and karaoke boxes. from the late 1960s, however, reverberations from across the pacific would lead to the nation’s own take on soul music as we know it in the west. some of the artists showcased on this compilation may not have been commercially successful but their legacy stands the test of time.

mzr is the new project by tobias szturmann started in 2015, his sound is described as a deep monotone and dubby techno sound with industrial elements. after several years as minuszwei and other names he dares to reboot with the already collected experience. his newest ep comes out with two massive remixes from samuel l session & andre kronert.

tommy mccook to be leader of the skatalites in the early 1960s, he went on to become the chief exponent of rock steady as leader of the supersonics house band at treasure isle. mccook remained a key session player throughout the reggae era, and during the roots reggae heyday of the mid-1970s, his expressive melodies found particularly strong outlet, especially on the music he created for grassroots producer bunny ‘striker’ lee as a member of the aggrovators, the studio outfit lee hand-picked from the cream of jamaica’s musical crop. when enhanced by the adventurous mixing experiments of king tubby, the engineer that turned dub into an art form, instrumental aggrovators music became positively ethereal, yielding an exceptional listening experience. on king tubby meets the aggrovators at dub station, tommy mccook blows mean sax and flute over dubs of outstanding tracks by johnny clarke, cornell campbell, linval thompson, delroy wilson, and others greats. first issued on third world in 1976, this vinyl reissue comes complete with four thematic bonus tracks, and the whole disc makes for essential listening. reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!

the visionary musician and record producer augustus pablo made some of the most unique and individual recordings in the history of reggae. as with his friend and mentor, jackie mittoo, the man born horace swaby was of mixed indian and african heritage, and although his middleclass background might have pointed him in a very different direction, the lure of jamaica’s sound system culture captured him at a young age, particularly after debilitating health problems saw him drop out of school. he began recording as a session keyboardist as the 60s gave way to the 70s, but everything changed when a schoolfriend introduced him to the melodica, a small plastic keyboard operated by a mouthpiece, which he used on seminal recordings for producer herman chin-loy, credited to augustus pablo on release. during the early 1970s, pablo crafted melodica instrumentals for all of the leading reggae producers, scoring ‘best instrumental’ for ‘java’ in 1973, and launching the rockers label to showcase self-produced work at the same time. this multifaceted compilation, first issued on bunny lee’s attack label in 2005, compiles memorable melodica interpretations of some of lee’s greatest productions, recorded over dub cuts of immortal numbers such as cornell campbell’s ‘queen of the minstrel’ and john holt’s ‘my desire.’ reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!

returning to hypercolour with a second volume of his sugar cane chronicles, gary gritness lays down more devastating funk and classy riffing over his trusty roland 606. after the first volume, released last april, sold out its vinyl run, gritness delivers more explorations and adventures into his unique and soulful world. having elusively built his reputation as an outstanding session player, live producer and fantastically dressed funkateer, gritness has delivered a handful of releases on labels like clone crown ltd, nyami nyami and his own diy and cassette-only slikk tapes. steady choosin gets downright fusion-jazz and gritness fires out seductive melodies and latin piano playing of the highest order whilst countin up with starr delves into a darker well of synth mania, with a sexual groove reminiscing of rick james, all the while retaining garys signature licks and riffs. runner joes revenge on the flip ramps up the hysteria for a gritty and colossal production that typifies his love of cyberpunk soundtracks and the drama and narrative to be found in this style. the sugar cane chronicles vol. 2 closes with the low-slung pool shark loot wrapping up on a mysterious and captivating tone, its wandering bassline and melodic touches carrying all the signature gritness sounds, with the p-funk sleaziness on top.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

art yard records continues its voyage into the omniverse of unreleased sun ra tapes with i roam the cosmos – an unreleased, previously unheard 1972 live session recorded at slug’s saloon in new york. limited 180 gram vinyl pressing only with tip on sleeve. check!! fronting a stellar 18-piece incarnation of the arkestra, i roam the cosmos finds sun ra taking us on a poetic journey to the outer limits of planetary awareness. while the captain of the space-ship declaims his message with arkestra vocalist june tyson as co-pilot, the arkestra voyage into the solar centres of esoteric astro-black knowledge aboard a comet-trail jam on ‘discipline 27-ii’. as current arkestra member knoel scott observes in his liner notes, sun ra was a teacher, come down to earth to spread the enlightenment of the ancients and advance the alter-destiny of humankind. this earth was not his home: he was here to wake the sleepers, and to make sure no-one would forget his message. the universe sent him to converse with us, and i roam the cosmos is another unique message from saturn, delivered for tomorrow’s world by art yard records.

this album -sesiones de panamá- was born from a live session in janeiros studio, and that freeform live attitude is clearly evident in the resulting music. throughout the six long tracks of the album, the trio build up progressive atmospheric pieces of genre-defying instrumental music that sits comfortably on rhythmic patterns reminiscent of house.

units and measurements is the collaborative project of christopher hreno, mathew jonson and colin de la plante. the project sees these long times friends and veteran producers exploring the limits of hardware based improvisation and deep synthesis and effects programing . documenting a single epic 24 hour session at jonson s mothership studio in berlin, this first release sees the trio exploring some of the headiest ambient and tunneling hypnotic techno to be found in any of their admittedly vast individual back catalogs. this release is without question a portrait of 3 masters of their craft at work, and quite unlike anything else you are likely to hear this year. units and measurements will be available in a double vinyl and digital formats on november 4th via blkrtz, with worldwide distribution via kompakt.

seven years, who cares? no one really but it seemed like a good excuse to do something a bit different. we spoke to some the artists that have helped shape wolf over the years and asked whether they would like to contribute to a double 7 inch release. excited by the unusual project session victim, frits wentink, greymatter & mr. fries have delivered four original tracks with the format in mind. hip hop, beat down, low slung & upfront house all contained across two records. this release will be vinyl only.

we re extremely pleased here at invisble inc hq to be releasing this amazing new album by veteran multi-instrumentalist and ethno-musicologist jon keliehor. originally from seattle and musically active since the 1960s jon started out playing drums and percussion in bands like the daily flash and bodine all the while becoming known as a venerable session and touring musician in his own right. not many people can claim to have played alongside jim morrison and james brown....but jon certainly has.
